Portugal – 2026

Joseph, July 2, 2026July 3, 2026

I had not been anywhere near the stadium this World Cup, but seeing as how this was the last game hosted by Toronto, and knowing it was a battle between two well represented Toronto communities, this was a match I wanted to get close to the action. Having taken so many great photos of Croatian World Cup Fans in Toronto, I planned on focusing on Portugal fans for this game, and I knew it wasn’t going to be very hard. They showed up with full authority.

It was fun being outside the stadium to start the game. We could all hear the anthems and hear the roar of the crowd as the match began. It was a special place to be. Knowing we didn’t pay thousands of dollars for our standing room was all the sweeter.

Still, people were following along on various devices. You can see the top of stadium in the background in the photo below. I was around the stadium until the hydration break, so I didn’t get a major moment around the stadium, but I can tell it would have been a great place to be.

Near the west side of the Fan Fest, people found small holes in the screen, and were able to watch the game. These Croatia and Portugal fans were friends before the match, I only hope they are still friend after.

After half-time, I walked up to Little Portugal. It was one of those 10km walking days. The eerie thing was, the streets were quiet. Almost every seat in every bar or restaurant was taken and a few had TVs outside for passing by spectators to grab a glimpse. Sonndr Cafe:

Roxton Public House:

Churchill, which was the place I kept coming back to:

Honestly, the end of the game was so confusing, and I wasn’t really watching the screens, but man, I was happy to be with eh Portugal fans in the end!

And while I was planning to go home, the streetcar wasn’t able to pass this excited crowd.

Yes, it might be only a round of 16, but the crowd wants what this crowd wants, and the crowd really wanted to have a good time partying, and I have no problem with that!

Fans rode garbage trucks:

If you were a driver and got out of your car to celebrate with the fans, they would pick you up and throw you in the air. I don’t know where these rules came from, but I absolutely love them!
