Ghana – 2026 Joseph, June 17, 2026June 28, 2026 This was magic. One of my more memorable games without question. Ghana world cup fans in Toronto were treated to the most electric of evenings and I was so happy to be there. And it helps to get a bit of context. Ghana fans were drawn to Sankofa Square because they were hosting Ghana fun fest and watch party. It sounded like a fun place to take photos, I’d never seen a game watch at the square before, and the larger the gathering the better. I knew things were going to be interesting when I noticed they had the game on going up the escalator in Eaton Centre. As for the gathering itself, it was amazing. Many thousands gathered, and had gathered well before I had arrived. It didn’t help that despite all the screens in the square, they used the smallest and lowest screen, so viewing was limited. I felt obligated to go up to a nearby building to look down on the crowd to give a sense of the gathering. That’s when I decided to get out of the rain and back to the screen in the Eaton Centre to see if anything was going on in there. I wasn’t alone in this idea. Here is a photo from the floor, and another photo from the store window looking down at the crowd gather inside the foyer of the mall. I spent the whole second half in the mall, and magically, in extra time, Ghana scored. It was loud and chaotic and everything I love about this project. Goal scoring shots below. 2014 Ghana – 2014 June 17, 2014June 17, 2014 The Harlem Underground on Queen Street West in Toronto has called themselves the “Africa 2014 World Cup HQ” so I had to go down to check out a game with an african team playing. I can confidently say, it’s a great choice, with an amazing back patio, dedicated TVs with… Read More
2026 Congo DR – 2026 June 23, 2026July 3, 2026 I’ve been trying to avoid doubling up venues this year, but Nganda African Street Food on Adelaide is the kind of venue I could have photographed dozens of games and been at the best location in the city. Broadly supporting teams like Ghana, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire and Congo DR, among… Read More
